God's Way of Doing Things
Let all things be done decently and in order. I Corinthians 14:40 (King James Version)
I appreciate the fact that God leads by example. He faithfully demonstrates the very things He commands, demands, and expects of me. He is definitely not like many parents who say, “Do as I say, not as I do.” With God it is always “Do as I say and as I do!” I look back at the account of creation and I see things being done decently and in order with specific creation on specific days.
I am currently reading the book of Numbers and what started out as repetitive and seemingly boring details quickly gave way to seeing God set up tabernacle worship and the placement of His people in a decent and orderly fashion. When I look at the vast number of Israelites in the wilderness (over a million) I realize the necessity of God doing things decently and in order.
But the words of I Corinthians 15:40 are taking on a new dimension for me. I am resting in the fact that what God does in my life is being done decently and in order as well. His daily plan for me is being carried out with precision, dignity, and individuality. There is design and purpose in the things He has me do, the people He has me meet, and the way He interacts with me. I am gaining a new appreciation for the way He orchestrates my life…..one day at a time.
There is a sense of security and peace when I take in the words of Psalm 37:23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD; and he delighteth in his way. The word ‘ordered’ comes from a Greek word that means to set up, establish, fix, prepare, direct, fashion, ordain, perfect, prepare, and provide. Talk about significance! Seeing God’s watchfulness and detailed ordering of my life is the reason I can then delight in His ways. It is a delight He revels in as well.
I may not always understand God’s choices for my life but in this truth I choose to live…..God is faithful, good, loving, attentive, involved, and in control. His Word is filled with examples of that! Nothing He does is haphazard or half-hearted. Who better to arrange my life than the very One who created and sustains life?
Father, I feel cared for by You! I joy in the fact that whatever You have planned for my day as well as my life will be done decently and in order. Thank you that I need never expect anything less! Amen.

Adversaries Amidst Advancement
For a wide door for effective service has opened to me, and there are many adversaries. I Corinthians 16:9 (New American Standard Bible)
Paul knew when God had opened a door of ministry for him in particular areas. He knew the work God would do through him would be effective and full of fruit. But he also knew adversaries would be present. He knew the enemy would not sit back and allow God’s work to continue unhindered. When I think of the Apostle Paul’s ministry I see it full of persecution, trials, hardships, and difficulties. None of this came as a surprise to him. It was all part of what was to be expected. Was he a doomsayer? No! He was a realist! He did not operate under the false idea of a trouble free life. His attitude was such that being in the center of God’s will often makes you the prime target of attack.
It is no different for us today. Many find that when they begin to walk with God in a fuller way, troubles just seem to appear out of no where. Our main adversary, the devil, hopes that his tactics will lead to discouragement and the eventual abandonment of our desire to link arms with God. He has a whole arsenal available to use against us: health issues, financial difficulties, losses, broken relationships, unexpected emergencies, peer pressure. He is hoping that the things we experience will cause us to view God as unloving and uncaring and the journey as too difficult and not worth it.
How gracious of God to forewarn us that attacks would come. His desire is that each episode would cause us to draw closer to Him, review truth, hold to Him tighter, and continue on in victory. When a season proves to be most difficult it eventually results in knowing God in a deeper way, gaining strength, and experiencing growth beyond what I had originally thought. Yes, the adversaries abound but God’s Word, God’s work, God’s presence, and God’s accomplishments abound even more. Those things I hunger for the most are brought about amidst the most trying circumstances but it is worth it!
Father, while I may see the enemies’ fingerprints all over the place, I also see Your fingerprints. I determine to keep my eyes on You. I refuse to allow any difficulty to malign Your character. With a renewed perspective I move forward! Amen.

Enriched Living
That in everything you were enriched in Him, in all speech and all knowledge…so that you are not lacking in any gift, awaiting eagerly the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will also confirm you to the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:5, 7, 8 (New American Standard Bible)
Have you ever read one of those lists that express who and what you are in Christ? I have and yet I can’t remember even one of them including the word enriched. It means to make rich, possess spiritual riches, and to be richly furnished. That is quite a list in itself! Yet due to our weaknesses and failures we can often feel more bankrupt than rich. Living more out of our lack than our supply.
I want to not only see myself as the spiritually rich person I am in Christ, but I want to live out of that richness. I want it to have a profound effect on the words I speak, the knowledge I possess, the wisdom I walk in, and the thoughts upon which I dwell. If my cash flow was limitless it would affect my life in big ways. In the spirit realm, I have a limitless “cash” flow and it is meant to affect my life as well.
In order to begin living the enriched life, I must be willing to have my spirit nurtured. How do I do that? By living connected to God every day… being aware of His presence, talking to Him about everything, asking for His help, seeking Him, obeying Him, and making Him my central focus. By sitting under the teaching of godly men and women, allowing them to enhance me with the truths God has taught them. By listening to Christian music that can stir me to tears as well as action. By taking in God’s Word and allowing it to take hold of me. By living in reliance upon and obedience to the Holy Spirit who lives in me. By daily placing myself under the rule and reign of Jesus Christ.
While there are many things I could add to that list, I feel a need to express one thing. For each of us, the contents of the things I mentioned are individualized. A spiritually enriched life is not a “one size fits all” formula. Just as we are unique individuals, God’s methods with us and for us are unique. We are not all called or expected to read the same books, sit under the same speakers, listen to the same music, or attend the same church. We must carve out our own walk with God and allow Him to show us how to do that. As one who so easily wants to copy others, that speaks loudly to me. I can only live richly as I learn to live distinctively as the person God created me to be. No comparisons. No competitions. No copies.
Father, you have enriched me in Christ. Direct my life in such a way that I see it, experience it, and know it daily! Amen.

Stay the Course
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. I Corinthians 15:57 (New American Standard Bible)
One of the aspects of God’s Word that I have come to appreciate has been it’s reassuring promises. Today’s verse can be a sign hung over any situation in my life. Anything I face and anything I am confronted with each day already has victory attached to it. And the wonderful truth is the victory is going to come through Christ…..each and every time! It may not look the way I thought it would look but when it is all said and done the victory will be apparent.
Sometimes we can be filled with fears and insecurities. Doubts weigh heavy on our heart and mind. The journey-road we are each on can become daunting at times. That is when I need God to whisper the reminders to me. Sometimes, His reminders come to me from two different sources…devotional books and His Word.
Once, at random, I opened the book I AM WITH YOU by John Woolley. Each day’s entry is written as if Jesus is the one talking. This paragraph strengthened me. Do not take back any of the matters which you have committed to Me…I, your Lord, am aware of every recurring doubt, but deep within you, there is bound to be the growing certainty of attainment…My plans for you are being perfected. The next day, the Apostle Paul said it this way in I Corinthians 15:58, Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
So what is it God wants me to hear and walk away with? Once again I am to see the importance of truth and cooperation. God is involved in my life and will lead me step by step in accomplishing all He has planned for me. My part is to stay the course, not get distracted or discouraged, and cooperate fully with Him. Let Him continue to do the transforming work in me as I take in His truths each day. Have my ears open to the sound of His voice and obey the nudgings that are from Him. While it is a walk of faith that does not entail a lot of detail or glimpses into what lies ahead, it is also a journey that has plenty for me to see, hear, and experience along the way. He is the initiator and I must be the responder. Therefore, I walk in confidence of who He is and what He can do.
Father, don’t allow me to get sidetracked. Help me to fix my eyes and heart on You and You alone. Amen.

Learning Where to Stand
And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power; that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. I Corinthians 2:4,5 (King James Version)
I get excited when I come across people who have a dynamic and intimate walk with God. I see characteristics in them that I want in my own life and before I know it I am in a struggle to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus…the author and finisher of my faith. They suddenly take center stage in my thinking and have much of my attention. I hang on their every word, read any book they have suggested, follow their advice, and rub shoulders with them as often as I can. The problem with that is my Christian life becomes too entangled and tied to a person. Without meaning to I begin to look to them for answers, direction, and growth. While my goal may be to get to know God better, I end up going about it the wrong way. In the end, God has to expose my idolatry and take me through a painful time of correction, repentance, and restoration.
Paul had such a desire for believers to base their faith on God’s wisdom and work. He sought to point people to God as their source for faith and growth through his life, words, actions, and message. For someone to become enamored with him instead of with God would have been tragic in his eyes as well as in God‘s eyes. That is why he often referred to himself as a vessel, a servant, a prisoner, and a messenger.
How I must take Paul’s words to heart each day. For if I do not guard my heart I will find myself once again in the throws of following the creature more than the Creator. Beth Moore’s words are a wake up call to me when she says, “People crave a human worth worshiping.” Ouch! That craving has side tracked and side swiped me more times than I care to admit. It is one of the hugest battles I fight on a daily basis.
So where is my hope and answer? In God! As He has shown me this aspect of myself, He has also presented Himself as my Healer. He redirects my steps, adjusts my focus, and woos me back to Himself. He is faithful in contrast to my unfaithfulness. He sees my desire for change and will continue to bring about that change.
Father, keep showing me what hinders me from abandoning myself to You and abiding in You. Help me to worship You alone. Amen.

Not Setting Myself Up
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 1 Corinthians 6:12 (New King James Version)
Paul knew there were many things he was allowed to do and yet if doing those things led to addiction or bondage he avoided them. Unless things are spelled out specifically in Scripture and begin with the phrase, “Thou shalt not” each of us must individually determine what to steer clear of….what to avoid. Sometimes, many times, the knowing of those things is brought about after experiencing the pull.
This truth is easy for me to grasp when it comes to an area such as food. Certain foods are trigger foods for me. To partake means an over whelming urge to over indulge. They are not the foods I can eat in moderation therefore they really should be avoided. This is cut and dry for me. It is a black and white area. I have no question as to whether or not I should make other choices. I know my limits. I know the consequence if I don’t apply this principle. My track record speaks for itself.
This morning, I am applying this truth to another area of my life. Unlike food, this is not a physical aspect but rather an emotional one. I am aware of certain things that will trigger negative emotions in me. Presently, I do not do well when those emotions are triggered so it is necessary for me to see what things should be avoided so that I am not “brought under the power” of a downward spiral.
I look back over the past week, one that has been filled with battles in my mind, and I see certain things I could have chosen NOT to do….certain things I could have not said, certain emails I could have not sent, certain expectations I could have not entertained. With each one a negative emotion resulted. I paid the price as did those who crossed my path. God and I will be walking through those instances in a time of acknowledgement, confession, and receiving of forgiveness. It will allow me the fresh start I need as I head into a new day.
I look forward to the day when the things I avoid now can once again be enjoyed. When my walk becomes such that a trigger is handled in the right way. For now, I would rather not set myself up for a battle.
Father, bring me to the place whereby I operate out of faith and confidence rather than out of dread and fear. Amen.

To Whom Credit is Due
What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, even as the Lord gave opportunity to each one. I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. I Corinthians 3:5,6 (New American Standard Bible)
Each of us who are believers in Christ have individuals we consider as the spiritual influences in our life. They were either involved in our salvation experience or in subsequent times of spiritual growth. Maybe it was a pastor, Sunday school teacher, ministry person, author, or just a special Christian God used in a great way to help us along on our journey with Jesus. They would be the first to come to mind if someone asked us who has had the greatest impact on our life. They may have gone on to be with the Lord or they may still be living on this earth. It may have been years since we last saw or spoke with them or we may still get together with them frequently. Whatever the case may be, their specialness and importance to us remains.
This was the kind of relationship Apollos and Paul had with the early Christians. Paul evangelized and established churches and Apollos worked faithfully with the congregations. It was easy for people to grow dependent on them and attribute their spiritual growth to these men. Who of us does not have our preferred speakers, preachers, and authors? Paul’s words are meant for any of us who have our ‘list’ of favorites.
Paul reminds us that any person who has helped us in our Christian life has simply been a servant through whom we have believed. They were the avenue or vessel God chose to use in our life. Then he quickly adds that although they were highly involved in the preaching and teaching of God’s truth, the growth itself was caused by God. Appreciate them? Yes! Highly esteem them? Absolutely! But the real credit goes to God. He is the one who caused us to listen to them. He is the one who caused their message to get through to us. He is the one who nudged us to open ourselves up to them as a person. He is the one who gave growth to the seeds they planted.
Certain individuals will always be special to me for the role they have played in my life. While my love, appreciation, and respect goes to them….the credit for growth goes to God!
Father, for so long I have given others the credit I should have been giving to You. I now see them as the vessels You graciously selected and used in my life. But all the glory and tribute belongs to You! Amen.

Receiving to Give
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures. 1 Corinthians 15:3,4 (New International Version)
We cannot give away what we do not first possess for ourselves and we cannot possess what we first do not receive. Paul stated this in relationship to his receiving and then passing on to others, the gospel message of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. I, too, never shared the gospel with an individual until after I had received it for myself.
This morning, I am pondering the things I pass on to others because I have received them myself. I listen when another speaks to me because I have had others give me their undivided attention. I forgive and give others a second chance because forgiveness has been extended to me. I ache for the hurt of others because I have had individuals come along side me in times of darkness and pain. I hug another in greeting because arms have welcomed me in ways that hugged my soul as well as my body. I encourage another in their faith because people have so graciously and consistently encouraged me. In other words, I pass on what I first received. I demonstrate what has been shown to me.
This idea of passing on what has been received is one of God’s kingdom principles. It is the way He has designed the Christian life to be lived. It honors Him as it helps others. I thank Him this morning for the people He has used in my life. They have invested their time, energy, and wisdom and I do not want to live as if it were all in vain. I want their actions to bear fruit beyond the branches of my life. I want their kindnesses to be multiplied as I duplicate and imitate them.
When Jesus fed the 3,000 and then the 5,000 he started with a small lunch of fish and bread. He handed to His disciples what was handed to Him. They then distributed to others what had been given to them. Our words and actions are part of the receiving and giving principle. May we learn to be receptive receivers and generous givers.
Father, thank you for all that You have given to me either directly or through the lives of other believers. May my life be one that keeps passing on what I have received. Amen.

The Gift of Examples
Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 1 Corinthians 10:11 (New American Standard Bible)
I am a visual person. I comprehend and learn better when something is shown to me rather than just spoken to me. God is gracious. He is extravagant in giving me examples to learn life lessons from. Some of those examples are found on the pages of Scripture and some of those examples are found in the lives of people who lived long after the Bible was complete. Today I am at a place whereby I need the review of examples to refresh my walk and broaden my view of the journey.
I am thinking back to the children of Israel in the wilderness. Forty years! And how did they spend most of their time? Complaining, whining, discontent, and argumentative. What did they miss? Seeing God’s provision, protection, power, and presence in their every day lives. It seems they were constantly looking at what others had, where others were going, and what others were doing instead of keeping their eyes, heart, and mind on the living God. God still remained faithful but the wonder of that faithfulness and the joy of living as recipients of that faithfulness were absent from their experience. Time and time again God did the things He did and said the things He said so that they would KNOW Him. Yet they ended up knowing so little about Him. God would have me learn from their example.
Each day that I live, I am the recipient of His grace, favor, direction, protection, and provision. He is not absent from me at any moment! He is faithfully working behind the scenes to unfold His plan and purpose for my life. He is doing a work in me in order that I would know Him and live life to the fullest. I lose the joy and wonder of it all when I start doubting any of that is true. My expectations dwindle when I begin to believe God is not involved, interested, or interceding in my life. My peace departs when I forget that I am in partnership with Him and will see His dreams for my life fulfilled. Above all I want to know Him and then I want to experience all that He has in mind for me. I bring to Him trust and obedience to His daily revelations and commands. He brings to me substance and sustenance of an abundant life.
Today, I choose to meditate on what He has done in the lives of His other children in history as well as the present. His work in and through them will do much to encourage me each step of the way. He offers no less to me and will faithfully carry out His best for me.
Father, help me to follow You with abandon! Fulfill every dream and intent You have for my life. Don’t let me miss a thing along the way. Fill me with the wonder and joy of You! Amen.

A Portrait of Love
Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (New King James Version)
A Bible study discussion last night centered on the subject of love. Feeling loved as well as contributing to others feeling loved. This morning, I am reviewing the definition of love as found in 1 Corinthians 13. The first three verses let me know actions without love (though noble) are really empty and amount to nothing in God’s eyes. I imagine the reason for that is because something besides love can drive the actions. Ever have someone do something nice for you but their demeanor clouded the whole thing? Ever have someone tell you they loved you but their facial expression, physical poise, and sense of distance left the words feeling hollow? Ever find yourself going through the motions yourself?
As I read through verses 4-7 I am acutely aware of God needing to teach me to truly love others. Each phrase seems opposite of what I know to be the condition of my heart many times. If I were to slip my name into each of the phrases it would sound foreign to me, “Pam suffers long and is kind; Pam does not envy; Pam does not parade herself, Pam is not puffed up; Pam does not behave rudely; Pam does not seek her own, Pam is not easily provoked, Pam thinks no evil; Pam does not rejoice in iniquity, but Pam rejoices in the truth; Pam bears all things, Pam believes all things, Pam hopes all things, Pam endures all things.” It would sound foreign because I find myself being impatient, envying, focusing on myself, behaving rudely, wanting my own way, taking things personally, thinking the worst of others, embracing false perceptions, disbelieving, doubting, and giving up. I see relationships driven more by wanting my needs met rather than true interest in the other person.
If this were the end of the story I would walk away discouraged, defeated, and disheartened. I didn’t list those things to self condemn. I wrote them to reveal and acknowledge what I need to bring to God and see where I need His help, grace, and molding in my life. He is the ultimate Lover! 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 is a portrait of Himself and it is the pattern by which He desires to paint my portrait. He knows that in my flesh and on my own I am incapable of living and walking in love. He knows that my selfish motives and areas of neediness can often get in the way. For that reason, I call upon Him and fall upon Him.
Father, You aren’t just loving, You are love. Teach me to love! Amen.

The Ways of Love
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (New International Version)
I have spent the past number of days nursing a hurt. Something was said to me that cut me to the core and continues to cut as I continue to rehearse it. Today’s passage reveals several things that transpired in that moment of words that wounded me. It reveals my own heart condition and what it will look like to change that condition.
I was easily angered, I have kept a record of the wrong done to me because I have continually thought about it, I have not been kind or patient toward the person who spoke the words, I have been rude in my noticeable distancing and avoiding. How far from the description of love I have been….how far from the example of love Christ shows to me!
I look at the last part of this passage and I see love in action. It acts rather than reacts to the people and circumstances of my life. There are several scenarios that play across my mind this morning whereby I need to ask God to help me initiate love toward others. Rather than curl up with my anger, perceptions, hurt feelings, or injured ego, I need to find shelter in His wings and His ways.
So how do I go about implementing the truths He is showing me this morning? I start with confession for where I have been wrong. I admit to God the sin of my heart, mind, and actions. I receive the forgiveness that He so unreservedly offers to me. I ask Him to show me practical ways to walk in love toward any I have been avoiding. I resist (through His grace) the temptation to give in to my flesh and just continue doing what I have been doing. This is not about the other person deserving it or a guarantee another’s attitude or actions will change. This is about walking in love so as to free me and reach out to others for their sake.
God has demonstrated every aspect of 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 to me innumerable times. He has placed individuals in front of me as well to show me through their examples how to walk in this kind of love. Now He invites me to join Him and follow His example.
Father, while You see my resistance, You also see my desire to live differently. Change in me is what I seek. Amen.

Imitate Not Duplicate
I am not writing this to shame you, but to warn you, as my dear children. Even though you have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. Therefore I urge you to imitate me. 1 Corinthians 4:14-16 (New International Version)
As a young Christian, I watched others closely. What they did, I did. What they did not do, I did not do. Why? Because the Christian life was so new to me that I wanted to learn how to live it correctly. Other believers were my example and I was blessed to be part of a church that had plenty for me to watch and follow.
As a young adult, that watching and following became different. A lack of love and appreciation for the person God created me to be led to a desire to be someone other than myself. I found it easy to take on another person’s mannerisms, personality, posture, even their voice. To be like them gave me a sense of worth and value that being myself did not afford. I had gone from following to copying and there is a difference.
When Paul told others to imitate him he did not desire for them to become clones of himself. He knew that each person is unique and one of a kind. He knew that God’s plan did not entail the disappearance of that uniqueness. How boring the world would be if only one type of flower existed. How dull meals would be if only one taste existed. Variety and individuality is a gift God has given us in the whole of creation including each and every person.
Paul took his role seriously as an example setter. The life he lived in Christ was one that could be watched and followed so that others could learn to grow in their own walk with Christ. He joyed over their growth and the results that came from that growth. He beamed with the delight of a parent as he watched his “children” in Christ become all that God intended them to become.
I short change myself, rob others, and actually resist God’s work in me when I choose to be someone other than who God chose for me to be. May I live in such a way that my uniqueness is not sacrificed out of a desire to be someone else. May I live in such a way that others can follow without duplication.
Father, who is it You have made me to be? Help me to see it and delight in it! Amen.

Avoiding That Which Hinders
All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 1 Corinthians 6:12 (King James Version)
There are times when doing things that are good in and of themselves is not necessarily good for us. If those things get in the way of, hinder, or slow down our journey to a desired end, then it is best to avoid doing them. Those are the things we definitely do not want over powering us, controlling us, or mastering us.
Food in and of itself is a good thing. God has graciously given us a variety of things with which to nourish our bodies. Yet even though all foods are allowable for me, there are some foods I choose not to eat at certain times or at all times. Why? I know they will trigger an eating binge for me. To eat them awakens in me a desire to over indulge for long periods of time. They are my red light or trigger foods and avoiding them for the most part is necessary for me. It’s a healthy choice I have come to make and it is the best choice for me.
I am finding, that just as there are certain foods I should stay away from, there is certain behavior I should also say “no” to. There are some things that are not bad in and of themselves, yet I know that if I act upon the desire to do them they will trigger emotional responses in me that are not good. My journey to freedom, walk of victory, and life of wholeness will be hindered and blocked big time!
I am learning that in the times when I am out of sorts I must discern what brought on the thoughts, feelings, and mood. One such time was last night and I had no trouble knowing the moment the emotions were triggered and the spiraling downward began. For now, I struggle in those times and hence they last far longer than they should. So for the present, while I am able to choose, I must resist an action that will get it started. Is it an action that will forever be forbidden? No. It is simply a necessity for the time being. Until I am able to handle the emotions in the right way, it is imperative that I avoid that which stirs those emotions. Within time, avoidance will be replace by moderation and moderation will eventually be replaced by the freedom to act.
Father, it is hard but so necessary to resist the things that are enjoyable but dangerous for me. Give me the wisdom to know when an end result will be opposite of what both You and I desire. Renew me, refresh me, and restore to me the joy of Your salvation. Amen.

Seeing the Way of Escape
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (New International Version)
The truth of this verse is evident….temptation is in our life and experienced by all. Praise God that truth is wrapped in the promise that He will faithfully provide a way of escape for us out of any temptation that comes upon us. We don’t have to wonder if there will be a way out, we can count on it!
Lately, one of God’s more prominent escape routes for me is to see the consequence ahead of time if I give in to the temptation. Much of what I am tempted with on a daily basis is not new to me. I have enough of a track record to rely upon to know what will happen if I give in to the enticement. Let me share a few personal examples.
If I partake of certain foods, I know they will lead to an eating binge. No doubt about it! Without fail (like alcohol to an alcoholic) control will be lost and all resolve to eat in a healthy way will be thrown out the window. If I read material from a ministry that at one time had a powerful hold on me, I will once again be in the throws of emotional dependency and recaptured by the very things from which I have sought freedom. If I give my mind over to negative thinking and wrong perceptions, I will spiral into a pit of darkness. If I allow others to be the center of my world instead of giving God that place, I will become disillusions, disappointed, and discouraged.
How do I know the results of each thing mentioned? I have fallen to those temptations too many times and the outcome has always been the same. The knowledge of that is my way of escape. If I say ‘no’ to the temptation I walk in victory and if I yield to it I face defeat. Last night I experienced victory in the area of not reading the ministry material but I admit defeat when it came to an eating binge. I rejoice in the one and accept today’s fresh start for the other.
Today will be a day which will entail temptations and yet it will also be a day filled with ways of escape. By God’s grace, I plan to take the escape routes each time.
Father, temptations and attacks come against my physical, spiritual, emotional, and social worlds. May the ways of escape be clearly discerned and consistently taken by me throughout this day. Amen.

When It Has Been Exposed
Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God. 1 Corinthians 4:5 (New International Version)
There is coming a day when all will be exposed and yet for the believer the Lord daily comes and brings to light that which is hidden in us. He pinpoints and exposes the motives of our hearts. Our reaction to what He reveals to us says a lot about our view of Him as well as our view of ourselves.
I am a hider by nature. I squirm at the thought of seeing the truth about myself especially in areas that await full healing and wholeness from the touch of His hand. That which brings me shame can often cause me to recoil in my spirit. I ache over the realization that certain aspects still mark my internal world. I long for victory yet am aware of the flaws. It is not a denial but rather a feeling of dread and disgust that fleshly tendencies still pervade and prevail. So I cower at the thoughts and cringe at the reality while sitting under a mental cloud of gloom. Not a pretty sight and not what my Father desires.
Last night, during a time of study with a friend, God revealed to me a different response to take when I come face to face with my own heart. Rather than hide, squirm, or despair, He wants me to bring the very thing I dislike in myself to Him and to ask for His grace and mercy to cover me there. That is the only way I will begin to see change take place. What I want Him to touch I must bring to Him. What I want Him to heal I must bring to Him. What I want Him to cleanse I must bring to Him. He will not be surprised by it or back away because of it.
He already knows my areas of bondage, insecurity, and emptiness. He knows the many ways I have sought to alleviate pain, fill voids, and get needs met apart from Him and how those attempts have failed. He even knows where I lack trust of Him and in Him. He sees the timidity of my steps, the shakiness of my hands, and the downward look of my eyes. In the midst of it all, hope has been ignited for I am beginning to see that the One who knows me best and loves me most stands ready to hear my cry for help. He has told me to come to Him as a child and that is exactly how I feel at the present…a mere child in dire need of His parenting.
Father, You are all about fresh beginnings and I need one now. Cover me with Your mantle of grace and mercy as I admit the truth to You and myself. I long for change. I long for You. Amen.

The Way of Escape
No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (New American Standard Bible)
Nothing is more discouraging or debilitating than a pull in your thoughts or emotions that would seek to take you by the hand and lead you away from a life of faith and joy. Joyce Meyer had it right with the title of her book The Battlefield of the Mind. It is definitely a battlefield. It is also a war zone of the soul. Many fight a silent battle and feel they are losing every time. They are all too familiar with thoughts that not only over whelm them but lead them into black holes of emptiness. It is a place far removed from Jesus’ words that spoke of the abundant life that He would make available to His followers. He wants us to know that it doesn’t have to be like this. None of us have to continue to be casualties of our thoughts that are self imposed or enemy induced. None of us!
It often takes time to realize we are living below God’s standard and desire for our life. Victory and freedom seems out of reach because we are so convinced we just can’t win against the onslaughts of our own mind games. Truth that is meant to set us free often seems ineffective. What is meant to empower us simply adds guilt and condemnation to our daily walk, until we reach a point where we decide enough is enough. Something rises up in us that wants a way out and a walk of change. The pain of living in defeat is finally overcome by the desire to have victory.
Such has been my experience. Many have been the times I have sat in a room full of people and become consumed with thoughts of insignificance, being invisible, not mattering to anyone, and feeling left out of conversations and life. None of those things were true, simply perceptions and feelings driven by emotional needs aching to be met. The temptation to stay in such a pit of darkness has often won out. In desperation, I asked God for help after admitting I could not free myself. His way of escape was clear. His words to me? “When you are tempted to avoid eye contact with others, look them in the eye. When you are tempted to sit in silence and dejection, take part in the conversations. When you are tempted to isolate yourself, enter into the life that is surrounding you.” Does it work? Absolutely! It brings me out of a prison of distance and places me into the joy and blessing of fellowship. This is new for me and I am thrilled by the possibilities it possesses.
Father, how You have longed to show me the way of escape. Forgive me for the countless times I closed my eyes, ears, and heart to Your ways. Now that You have shown me what to do, help me to do it. I trust You and I love You. Amen.

Believing What God Says
And such were some of you: but you are washed, but you are sanctified, but you are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. I Corinthians 6:11 (21st Century King James Version)
As a believer in Christ, I am sanctified by God. That means I am set apart and pronounced clean! For one who use to walk in shame, regret, and unworthiness that is a thought I treasure. No matter what I might think of myself and no matter what others may think of me, I can rest in the words my Father has spoken over my life. If He says it, it is true! Describing myself with the language of Scripture is imperative.
Too often, even as believers, we have a tendency to look at our actions, sins, mistakes, failures, and shortcomings as ways to define ourselves (and others). We wear labels of disgust when all the while God is wanting us to hear and believe the truth He is pronouncing. God says I am a new creature in Christ. Do I believe it? God says I am precious in His sight. Do I accept that statement? God says I am the apple of His eye. Do I own those words for myself? God says I am forgiven. Do I rejoice in that truth? God says I am chosen by Him. Do I revel in that?
Part of walking by faith is taking the things God says about me and accepting them above my own feelings and thoughts about myself. God wants me to think of myself as He thinks of me. He wants me to see myself as He sees me. For years I could only accept the fact that God knew every disgusting detail of my life….I was an open book to Him. He was fully aware of each sin and shortcoming. That was predominant in my thinking so I felt it was predominant in His thinking. The enemy of my soul found pleasure in my self loathing and self condemnation. As long as I was convinced God was as repulsed with me as I was with myself, I was unable to live in the freedom and knowledge of the truth.
That began to change the day I realized what God’s unconditional love meant. It was that truth that allowed me the freedom to see the positive verses in Scripture as being something I could accept for myself. That feeling of “God merely tolerates me” had to be replaced with “God cherishes me.” It is His words and His voice that are changing me!
Father, I hunger to hear Your words spoken over my life. Today, I open my hands, ears, and heart to everything You say about me. Thank you for each truth You help me to digest. Amen.

In Christ Alone
Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. I Corinthians 11:1 (King James Version)
Paul penned these words to the converts in Corinth, Ephesus, and Thessalonica. His goal was not to have people ultimately follow him but to point them to the One who could be their Savior, Deliverer, Healer, Friend, Comforter, and Companion….Jesus Christ. Paul set an example for them to follow which would eventually lead them into an intimate relationship with God through Christ. Today, we have many people in ministry who would voice his same words to new believers as well. People are being used of God to mentor and encourage young believers in their faith until they reach a point whereby they are completely reliant upon God and able to then become an encourager to someone else. It is a precious system God has used and honored many times.
I have been the recipient of such encouragers. For over three decades I have been blessed by several significant relationships that had the flavor of Paul’s words. God graciously brought women into my life who saw something in me that needed to be nurtured and cultivated. Out of love they invested themselves into my life. I would not be the person I am today without their influence. If that were the entire picture all would be well in my corner of the world. Unfortunately what they never fully saw and what I never fully understood was an un-addressed issue in my life.
My area of struggle had to do with emotional dependency (also known as soul ties and relational idolatry). This is the case of one who looks to people and relationships to receive a sense of love, acceptance, significance, identity, and attention. All deep needs are directed toward the significant person who becomes their HOPE of getting those needs met. The relationship is for the sole purpose of survival. While I knew something was not right in the way I related to and looked to the significant people in my life I was clueless as to why I did it and how I could be free from it!
I was forced to take a hard look at this issue when a mentoring relationship abruptly ended a year and a half ago. As I found myself recently heading into yet another dependency driven relationship, I became desperate for not only release from pain and captivity, but to experience God as my true Source for the meeting of all needs. When that became the cry of my heart, He graciously led me to freedom which is only found in Himself!
Some who do not struggle with this issue, might read what I have written and wonder what the big deal is. But to any who are in the stronghold of emotional dependency, I pray my words offer you the hope that freedom is available and possible for YOU! The two resources God used to show me my bondage and way to freedom were EMOTIONAL DEPENDENCY by Lori Rentzel and PLEASE DON’T SAY YOU NEED ME by Jan Silvious. To God be the glory for the writing of both and the effect they have had on my life. It is now my sincere desire to help point others to the only One who can and will set them free. That One is Jesus Christ!
Father, I cannot find the words to thank you fully for all You have done! I am free and I can’t get over the wonder of it! I praise You! Amen.

The Reward of Death
I die daily. I Corinthians 15:31 (King James Version)
I have spent the last year and a half keeping alive something in me that needed to die. It was an attitude of my heart and I gave it life every time I recounted the loss, pain, and disappointment. I breathed life into its existence each time I reviewed it in my mind or in conversation with others. While I wanted freedom from the effects it had on me I was unwilling to put it to death…..until recently. God brought me to a point where I saw the attitude for what it was and I realized the price I was paying by keeping it alive.
It is not that I had never confessed it before. I had…many times. It is not that I didn’t want freedom. I did…often. It was that I chose to hold on and refused to let go. As God showed me what I was doing to myself and all that I was missing out on in His kingdom, my hands opened in submission and my heart broke in relinquishment. I knew there was forgiveness but I was not prepared for the sense of freedom that would come. That which I had struggled with and wondered if I would ever be free from, lost its grip as I released mine. I felt like my entire chest cavity had just been cleaned out and an antihistamine had been infused into my spirit. There was no longer the desire to harbor the attitude and feast off its presence.
Jesus said in John 12:24 that “unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it will abide alone. But if it dies it will bring forth much fruit.” Putting to death this attitude in myself through confession, brokenness, and release, has begun to bring forth fruit. The fruit is being seen in different areas. My perspective is coming in line with God’s perspective. Peace and joy are being experienced. And my prayer life is taking on a new dimension. As I intercede for others who battle attitudes of the heart I realize afresh the activity of the enemy in their life, the real source of their pain, and the needed work God will have to do in them. The bondage I lived in and the freedom I experienced will now be used to minister to others.
God has truly brought me through the most difficult circumstance of my life so far. There were times I wasn’t sure deliverance would ever be mine. So often I felt I was a terminal case and hope waned. But God knew better and so did many believers who came along side me and consistently told me the truth. I thank each one of them and praise a God who was intent on my “death.”
Father, I am still in an “I don’t believe it is finally over” mode. My heart is over whelmed with gratitude to You. While there is still work to be done in many areas, I have tasted of freedom that can only come from You. Amen.

Repairing the Break
So that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. I Corinthians 12:25 (New American Standard Bible)
One of things Christ prayed for while He was here on earth (and I believe still prays for in Heaven) is that there would be unity within the body of believers. The same quality of unity He shares with His Father. His desire is that there would be no division in the body….His body. When I see the word division I think of separation, a pulling apart, a break, or tear. It is not meant to be that way and yet sadly it often is.
I can tell when I am unified with a believer and I can definitely tell when something has divided us. Division for me brings discomfort and difficulty in seeing them face to face. Conversations become strained and communication may become non existent. The flow of fellowship seems to come to a stop in much the same way that a faucet has been shut off…whether gradually or quickly. Closeness is replaced by distance. Warmth is replaced by a sudden chill. The scenario is all too common in my mind and the Lord is once again asking me some direct, heart searching questions. If I put up resistance to what He is trying to teach me I will lose in many ways. Relationships will sour and friendships will dissolve. It is never worth it in the long run.
For me the break down occurs when I have allowed a spirit of offense to take root and I have neglected to take care of it in a biblical way. It may have come because I misunderstood something, read something the wrong way, or took something personal. Suspicions grew, hurt set in, pride abounded, and my flesh ruled. Whether I want to admit it or not, I can usually tell the moment a shift has taken place within me and the battle of my will begins! But when I am finally ready to stop blaming others and excusing myself, the division can be properly attended to. God’s grace is so necessary as I ask Him to once again infuse within me a humble and honest spirit. If I allow Him, He will take me through a time of breaking my will in order to restore and bless a relationship within the body of Christ.
None of this comes naturally or easily for me. I would rather hide, deny, defend, and depart. I would rather not admit I have been hurt. I would rather crawl into the comfort of other relationships. I would rather give up. But I have a loving heavenly Father who is intent on teaching me that His ways are higher than my ways and His thoughts are higher than my thoughts. I will not grow and He will not be glorified if I do not cooperate fully in all areas!
Father, I need Your grace to take the necessary steps of reconciliation. I sense the division and I desire Your healing of a precious friendship. Fill me with Your love as I finally move in the right direction. Amen.
